Spodiopogon sibiricus
(Poaceae)
Siberian greybeard
Native to slopes and mountains in Japan, Korea, China and Siberia, where it frequently occurs
in forest glades and among shrubs. Clump-forming and upright to 1.2m tall in flower, with a
neatly rounded form. Erect terminal panicles are produced in July and August. The
inflorescences are effective until late October. The thin, flat leaves are medium green, to
15mm wide, held nearly horizontal. Foliage turns rich red and burgundy in autumn unless hard
frosts when they will turn directly from green to brown. Prefers light shade but grows well
in full sun if provided adequate moisture. Not drought tolerant. Easily grown in a shrub
border. Effective as a specimen or in sweeps and masses.
Ht. 1.2m. Very hardy
