Sesleria caerulea
(Poaceae)
Blue moor grass
Native to Europe, including the British Isles, often in calcareous grasslands, limestone
rock-crevices, and screes. Low growing, forming basal mounds of strongly blue-green foliage
to 20cm tall. To 4mm wide, the leaves are two-toned: strongly glaucous-blue on their upper
surfaces with dark green undersides. Due to the way the foliage lies, both colours are always
visible. Blooms April to May, the small spikelike panicles are held above the foliage on
slender stalks. Flowers are blackish at first, with light yellow pollen sacs, turning mostly
green and becoming inconspicuous. Attractive when planted in groupings.
Ht. 20cm. Very hardy
