Little bluestem,
prairie beard grass
Native to prairies and open woods, dry fields and hills from Quebec and Maine to Alberta and
Idaho, south to Arizona and Florida. Originally one of the most characteristic grasses of the
American tall grass prairie, wide ranging and tolerant of moisture conditions varying from
average to extremely dry, and able to grow on both acid and alkaline soils. Strictly
clump-forming, it is fine-textured but not particularly little. Effective when planted in drifts.
