A huge, variable grass, found on every continent except Antarctica and especially
common in freshwater and brackish wetlands in the world's temperate zones.
Sturdy and upright, it usually grows 1 - 3m tall. The canes have been widely used for thatching.
Leaves are grey-green, to 5cm wide. The large terminal inflorescences appear in August
or September, opening golden-tan to bronze-purple, drying to translucent silver.
