Pennisetum alopecuriodes (Poaceae)
Fountain grass,   chikara shiba
Native to sunny open lowlands and grassy places in Japan and over much of eastern Asia. This extremely variable species is the most commonly grown of the truly cold-hardy fountain grasses. Typically 60 - 90cm tall, but cultivated selections range from less than 30cm to more than 1.5m. Leaves are narrow, to 12mm wide, green in summer turning golden-yellow in autumn. Inflorescences are spikelike racemes, usually dense and cylindrical, resembling large foxtails. They are superb as cut materials for fresh bouquets. Flower colour varies from dark purple (most common) to cream-white, and flowering period begins as early as June or as late as September. Moderately drought tolerant, best with regular moisture. Especially effective when planted in groups or masses, or in decorative containers.
Ht. 60 - 90cm. Very hardy
