Molinia caerulea subsp. arundinacea (Poaceae)

Tall purple moor grass.

Native to fens, fen scrub, and along rivers in the British Isles as well as to continental Europe and Asia. Produces mounded basal foliage 60 - 90cm tall, topped by stately inflorescences to 2.4m tall, either upright or arching. Leaves green or grey-green in summer, to 12mm wide. The entire plant turns rich golden-yellow in autumn. Strong sculptural form. Needs a few seasons to reach mature size and beauty, but will last for many years with minimal maintenance. Best in cool climates. Tolerates low soil fertility.
