Molinia caerulea
(Poaceae)
Purple moor grass.
Native to moist places, including heaths, moors, bogs, fens, mountain grasslands,
and lake shores in the British Isles as well as continental Europe and Asia.
Strictly clumping, producing a low mound of basal foliage, with leaves to 9mm wide,
usually green, typically turning golden-yellow in autumn. Blooms in midsummer,
the narrow panicles held above the foliage on slender stalks varying from strictly upright
to strongly arched, to 1m tall. Flower spikelets are purple-coloured, but this colour is
subtle due to their small size. Requires moist, cool summer conditions for best growth.
Good container subject or accent plant.
Ht. 1m. Very hardy
