Hysterix patula (Poaceae)
Bottle-brush grass
Native to moist or rocky woods in eastern North America. Clump-forming, upright, to 1m tall. Grown for the attractive bottlebrush-like inflorescences, to 15cm long, first appearing in mid-June and produced intermittently through August. Opening green, bleaching to tan, they often remain attractive into autumn, when the deciduous forest foliage is at its colour peak. Useful green or dried for cut flower arrangements. Ideal for naturalising in shaded gardens.
