Elymus magellanicus
(Poaceae)
Magellan wheatgrass
Native to higher elevations in South America, this tufted clump-former has the most intense
blue foliage of all the grasses. Its colour is so strong that other grasses traditionally
considered bluish, such as Helictotrichon sempervirens and Festuca glauca, appear dull in
comparison. Foliage is semi-evergreen in mild climates. Unfortunately, this cool-season
grower really resents humid summers with high night temperatures. In southern England it
is prone to severe foliar rust disease. Still, the dramatic colour is worth some coddling.
Sharply drained soil is a necessity, especially in areas with wet winters. Light shade helps
in hot climates. Does well in coastal areas. Makes a superb container subject.
