Native to North America and Eurasia, mostly in drier habitats in sun or in open woodlands. Densely tufted, similar to Deschampsia caespitosa but smaller in all its parts, usually less that 60cm tall. The inflorescences are billowy but not always as dense. The spikelets vary in colour from bronze to pale greenish yellow. Of easy culture on a variety of soils in part sun or shade. One of the few grasses that grows well in dry woodland settings. A cool season grower, flowering in midsummer.
