Goldbeard grass
This grass, which is closely related to Sorghastrum nutans and is sometimes known as
Chrysopogon nutans, is found mostly on sandy soils and forms large rounded tussocks of
strongly two-ranked arching green leaves. In midsummer it produces large, showy, pyramidal
panicles 15cm long of gold and purple long-awned spikelets. The branches of these panicles
are produced in well-spaced whorls, creating an open and elegant head up to 1.2m tall.
Useful as a container subject or feature plant.
