Chrysopogon gryllus (Poaceae)
Goldbeard grass
This grass, which is closely related to Sorghastrum nutans and is sometimes known as Chrysopogon nutans, is found mostly on sandy soils and forms large rounded tussocks of strongly two-ranked arching green leaves. In midsummer it produces large, showy, pyramidal panicles 15cm long of gold and purple long-awned spikelets. The branches of these panicles are produced in well-spaced whorls, creating an open and elegant head up to 1.2m tall. Useful as a container subject or feature plant.
Ht. 1.2m. Very hardy
