Native to wooded slopes, moist thickets, and river bottoms in southeastern North America.
A clump-forming perennial ornamental grass with drooping panicles of flowers, excellent for
drying. Needs full sun. Begins flowering in midsummer. Spikelets light green at first,
becoming red-bronze in autumn and finally light salmon-buff, remaining attractive through winter,
especially when encased in ice or dusted with snow. Impressive when planted in drifts.
