Carex secta
Pukio
(Cyperaceae)
Found throughout New Zealand along stream banks, swamps and other damp places comes this
large Sedge, which is at the same time both handsome and extraordinary. With long, graceful,
very narrow, weeping, yellowish-green leaves up to six feet in length; it forms large tussocks
bearing three-foot flower panicles in summer. Also, in a strange, unique manner, the matted
roots and decaying leaves combine eventually to produce huge, broad, conspicuous pillars that,
over time, could reach over 1.5m in height and bodily lift the plant above its original home.
Ht. 1.6m. (plus pillar!) Very hardy
