Carex flagellifera (Cyperaceae)

From New Zealand, where it is a native of damp places in the open and forest margins, comes this interesting and attractive Sedge. Forming dense tussocks, it has the general appearance of a larger version of the red-leaved Carex comans. The flowering stems are hidden among the very narrow leaves but as the seeds develop, they elongate along the ground to three feet or more.
