Carex baccans
(Cyperaceae)
Berried sedge,
Crimson-seeded sedge
This is a remarkably different species from the Himalayas. Forming loose tufts of narrow,
gracefully curving leaves, it produces panicles of flowers well above the foliage that develop
into, most unusually for a Sedge, tight, erect, clustered bunches of highly decorative berries
varying in colour from coral-red to lustrous purple. Likes partial shade, fertile soil, with
plenty of moisture. Good near streams. Hardy in mild areas, it is also a beautiful and splendid
plant for the conservatory.
