Ampelodesmos mauritanica
(Poaceae)
Mauritania vine reed
This is a rather splendid ornamental grass found in the Mediterranean and North West Africa.
Very robust, it forms large tufts of very tough (handle with care), rigid, rush-like leaves
and bears impressive 60cm one-sided flower panicles, greenish-yellow suffused with purple,
which appear from spring to summer. Makes a good specimen plant and is excellent for flower
arranging. A striking plant for a sunny position. The common name refers to its former use
in tying together grapevines.
